Since June, a total of 148 cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) have been recorded in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra among children under 15 years old. Among these cases, Chandipura virus (CHPV) has been identified in 51 instances. Unfortunately, 59 children have lost their lives due to AES, a condition characterized by brain inflammation and swelling caused by various pathogens and toxins.
The health authorities, including the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), and DG Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), have been closely monitoring the situation. As of July 31, the number of AES cases has been decreasing, with Gujarat taking proactive measures such as insecticidal sprays, health education campaigns, and prompt referral of cases to specialized facilities.
A National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT) has been dispatched to Gujarat to support public health efforts and conduct a thorough epidemiological investigation. Chandipura virus, transmitted by sand flies and ticks, primarily affects children under 15 years old, leading to symptoms ranging from fever to convulsions and, in severe cases, death. While there is no specific treatment for CHPV, early detection and improved vector control are crucial for managing the outbreak effectively.
