Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday on World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat’s choice to return her Khel Ratna and Arjuna medals. This action was taken in the midst of a dispute involving the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its previous president, Brij Bhushan Singh, who is a member of the BJP.
On her route to PM Modi’s house on Saturday, Vinesh Phogat dropped off her Arjuna and Khel Ratna awards on the Kartavya Path sidewalk in Delhi. She was then halted by the police. In protest of Brij Bhushan Singh’s aide Sanjay Singh being elected WFI president, she had chosen to return her prizes. Rahul Gandhi stated in a tweet that “for every daughter of the country, self-respect comes first and any other medal or honor comes after that.”
He also tweeted that, “Today, have these courageous daughters’ tears outweighed the price of “political advantages” from a “declared Bahubali”? The prime minister is the country’s protector. It hurts to see such callousness on his part.” The Congress leader shared a video of Vinesh Phogat being stopped by police at Kartavya Path on her way to meet with Prime Minister Modi in the same tweet. Her Arjuna and Khel Ratna awards were still on the road’s pavement.
