In Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, women are celebrating Raksha Bandhan by tying rakhis to trees and offering fertilizers instead of sweets to raise environmental awareness.
This initiative, led by the WhatsApp group ‘VIP’, aims to promote tree preservation and sustainable practices. The group’s committee organizes and coordinates these activities as part of the Raksha Bandhan celebrations.
Neetu Gupta, president of the committee behind the initiative, explained that Raksha Bandhan represents the sacred bond of mutual care between siblings.
She emphasized that the goal of tying rakhis to trees and offering fertilizers is to foster a connection with the environment, inspiring people to engage in conservation efforts.
Gupta added, “We chose to have women tie rakhis to trees. Since last Thursday, our group members have been tying rakhis, applying tilak, and watering the trees with fertilizer mixed in the soil as a substitute for sweets.”
She further explained, “Given the escalating climate change crisis, we believe that large-scale tree planting is crucial for environmental protection. We undertook this initiative in mission mode, aiming to plant one lakh trees this year.”
Gupta mentioned that the group has tied rakhis to approximately 1,000 trees so far. Municipal Commissioner Vipin Kumar Mishra lauded the initiative and emphasized the need to transform it into a widespread movement.
