A chilling development has emerged in Uttar Pradesh as wolf-related incidents escalate across the state. The latest terror began in Bhawanipur village, Aligarh district, where a wolf was reported to have killed a goat. The goat’s carcass, marked with injuries and suspected wolf claw prints, has been sent to the Government Veterinary Hospital in Chharra for autopsy. In response, a team from the Atrauli forest department has been dispatched to assess the situation, while locals are demanding increased security measures from the district administration.

This incident follows a spate of wolf attacks in Bahraich district. On Wednesday night, a 50-year-old woman named Pushpa Devi was severely injured in her sleep by a wolf in Raipur Korean Tepra village. According to family reports, the wolf entered through an open door and attacked her before fleeing when neighbors arrived. Devi is currently receiving treatment at Bahraich District Hospital. This attack is part of a troubling trend, as Bahraich has experienced multiple wolf attacks since mid-July, resulting in at least eight deaths and over 30 injuries.
In response to these alarming incidents, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has initiated “Operation Bhediya” to capture a pack of wolves terrorizing 50 villages in Mahsi tehsil. To date, five wolves have been captured, and efforts are focused on apprehending the remaining wolf, which is believed to be the alpha of the pack. The operation involves 165 forest personnel, 18 shooters, and the use of thermal camera-equipped drones and snap cameras. Additionally, solar and high-mast lights have been installed in vulnerable areas to enhance security.
Speculation about the cause of these attacks includes the possibility of diseases such as rabies or canine distemper virus. SP Yadav, head of the International Big Cat Alliance, suggested that such diseases might be altering the wolves’ behavior, making them more aggressive toward humans. He emphasized the need for thorough analysis of captured animals to determine the exact cause of these attacks. Yadav also noted that while rare, such behavior can occur in big cats under distress or illness.
The situation remains dire as residents and officials brace for more potential attacks, with a strong focus on preventing further incidents and ensuring the safety of the community.
