In a podcast, Pitroda had stated that “people in the east resemble the Chinese, those in the west bear a resemblance to the Arabs, those in the north might look like Caucasians, and those in the south might resemble Africans.” These comments were strongly condemned by BJP leaders as “racist” and “divisive.”
Pitroda later clarified that his statements were twisted and had nothing to do with the Congress party or its manifesto. However, the controversy snowballed, and he ultimately decided to step down from his position “of his own accord.”
Despite the controversy, the Congress party has now decided to reinstate Pitroda as the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress. This move suggests that the party leadership has forgiven Pitroda and believes in his ability to lead the overseas wing of the party.
