On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Congress party following backlash over his participation in Ganpati puja at the residence of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. He accused the opposition of being “power hungry” and attempting to divide society. During a rally in Bhubaneswar, he stated, “The British, who implemented the policy of ‘Divide and Rule,’ were disturbed by Ganesh Utsav. Today, those trying to fracture Indian society are similarly agitated by Ganesh Pooja. The Congress and its ecosystem are upset because I attended this festival”.
Modi also condemned a recent incident in Karnataka where a Lord Ganesh idol was temporarily placed in a police van amid protests against violence directed at Hindus. He described this act as a “greater sin,” asserting, “The whole country is disturbed by those images”. This comment followed widespread criticism of the Congress government in Karnataka for its handling of the situation, which included the arrest of protestors during a Ganesh immersion ceremony.
