West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding severe flooding in the state, specifically blaming the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for exacerbating the situation. In her letter, she highlighted that the DVC released approximately 500,000 cusecs of water, which led to significant flooding across several districts in South Bengal, including Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, and Howrah.
Banerjee described the current floods as the worst in the Lower Damodar region since 2009, affecting over 1,000 square kilometers and nearly five million residents. She emphasized the urgent need for central government assistance, requesting immediate release of funds to address the extensive damage caused by the floods. The chief minister criticized the DVC for prioritizing power generation over flood management and indicated that if this approach continues, her government may sever ties with the corporation entirely.
In her appeal to PM Modi, Banerjee urged that this matter be treated with utmost seriousness and that substantial financial support be allocated for comprehensive flood management efforts to alleviate the suffering of those impacted.
