The Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking his intervention to ensure the security of Rahul Gandhi and other participants in his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.’ This development comes a day after Rahul Gandhi-led Congress workers clashed with Assam police personnel on the Guwahati city limits.
Yesterday, the Assam Police filed an FIR against Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders for the clash. They are accused of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, breach of peace, and others. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statement that Congress workers’ “naxalite tactics” are “not part of Assamese culture” prompted the filing of the lawsuit.
The party President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to the Union Home Minister last night on the serious security issues faced by Rahul Gandhi and the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam over the past few days.
In his letter to the Home Minister, Mr Kharge noted that in multiple cases where the Assam Police has been judged to be deficient in providing sufficient security, Gandhi is eligible for protection under the Z+ category. He also mentioned the defacing of Congress posters and BJP workers blocking the Congress yatra on January 21 and assaulting state party chief Bhupen Borah.
The Assam Police has consistently stood by and/or permitted BJP workers to approach Shri. Rahul Gandhi’s convoy, breaching his security perimeter and putting his and his team’s physical safety in jeopardy, in all of the alarming incidents listed above, Kharge further added.
