Know More About Odisha’s First-Ever Woman Muslim MLA, Sofia Firdous
Sofia Firdous, a Congress MLA from Odisha's Barabati-Cuttack seat, has her name recorded in history books. She is the first Muslim woman legislator elected to the Odisha Assembly.
Sofia Firdous, a Congress MLA from Odisha’s Barabati-Cuttack seat, has her name recorded in history books. She is the first Muslim woman legislator elected to the Odisha Assembly.
Ms Firdous defeated BJP candidate Purna Chandra Mahapatra by a margin of 8,001 votes. Sofia Firdous is from a political family. She is the daughter of Mohammed Moquim, a senior Congress leader.
The party replaced Mr Moquim with Ms Firdous in the 2024 Odisha Assembly elections, and she won. Ms Firdous received a civil engineering degree from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology.
In 2022, she also finished the Executive General Management Program at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB). Firdous was elected president of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India’s Bhubaneswar Chapter in 2023.
She also works as the East Zone Coordinator for CREDAI’s women’s division. She serves as Co-Chair of the CII-I Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Bhubaneswar Chapter and is an active member of INWEC India.
She is married to entrepreneur Sheikh Meraj Ul Haque. She follows in the footsteps of Odisha’s first female chief minister, Nandini Satpathy, who held the same electorate in 1972.
