The Election Commission of India has officially announced the schedule for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the first elections since the abrogation of Article 370. The elections will take place in three phases:
– First Phase: September 18, covering 24 seats
– Second Phase: September 25, covering 26 seats
– Third Phase: October 1, covering 40 seats
Votes will be counted on October 4, coinciding with the counting of votes for Haryana, which also holds elections on October 1.
This announcement follows the Supreme Court’s directive for the elections to be conducted by September 30, after upholding the central government’s decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. In contrast, the 2014 assembly elections were held in five phases, indicating a shift in the electoral process for this upcoming election cycle.
