On May 27, 1964, India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, passed away in office. Lal Bahadur Shastri took over as prime minister; during his presidency, the 1965 India-Pakistan War broke out.
Amidst food scarcity, Lal Bahadur Shastri’s motto ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ during the 1965 conflict helped to lift the spirits of both farmers and troops. Shastri also supported the Green Revolution in India in 1965, highlighting the necessity of increasing the country’s food output.
