On Saturday, the Rajasthan Education Department implemented a new guideline banning sharp-edged instruments such as knives and scissors in schools. This decision comes in response to a violent incident in Udaipur, where a Class 10 student attacked a classmate with a knife, resulting in severe injuries.
The guidelines mandate that teachers check students’ bags to prevent such items from being brought into schools, and students who violate this rule will face disciplinary action. Director of Secondary Education Ashish Modi emphasized that schools should be safe environments for students and that violence has no place in educational settings. The new rule will be prominently displayed on school notice boards and communicated to students during assemblies.
The violence in Udaipur escalated when a fight between two 15-year-old classmates led to one stabbing the other in the thigh with a knife. This incident triggered a violent response from the community, with protests resulting in the burning of cars and stone-pelting. In response, the police imposed prohibitory orders and used force to disperse the crowd. The conflict was reportedly exacerbated by tensions between different communities. A substantial police presence was deployed to manage the situation and restore order.
