Singh, born in 1931 in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, was a distinguished diplomat and politician. He served as India’s External Affairs Minister from 2004 to 2005 during the UPA-I government led by PM Manmohan Singh.
Singh was also a prolific author, known for his writings on various subjects, including foreign affairs and the life of a maharaja. Singh’s contributions to diplomacy were recognized with the Padma Bhushan in 1984.
He also held prominent positions, such as ambassador to Pakistan, and worked closely with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s office from 1966 to 1971. PM Modi expressed condolences on X (formerly Twitter), praising Singh’s rich contributions to diplomacy and foreign policy and acknowledging his intellect and literary achievements.
Modi’s message conveyed thoughts of sympathy to Singh’s family and admirers during this time of grief. Singh’s son and other family members are expected to arrive in Delhi for the last rites. Singh’s notable works include ‘The Legacy of Nehru: A Memorial Tribute’, ‘My China Diary 1956-88’, and his autobiography, ‘One Life is Not Enough’.
