Australia’s veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon has identified Indian batsmen Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant as crucial players to watch ahead of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The series, starting November 22 in Perth, will be the first five-match Test series between the two teams since 1991/92. The games will continue in Adelaide (pink-ball Test), Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney until January 7, 2025.
India has triumphed in the last two Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, winning 2-1 in both 2018/19 and 2020/21. Lyon, speaking to Star Sports, emphasized the significance of Sharma, Kohli, and Pant, while also noting potential threats from other players like Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Ravindra Jadeja.
Kohli has been prolific in Australia, amassing 1,352 runs at an average of 54.08 in 13 Tests, with six centuries and four fifties. Sharma has scored 408 runs in seven Tests, including three fifties. Pant has accumulated 624 runs in seven Tests at an average of 62.4, with one century and two fifties.
Lyon, with 530 Test wickets in 129 matches, acknowledged the challenge of facing India’s formidable batting lineup. He stressed the need for Australia’s bowlers to maintain high performance levels to challenge India’s defense.
Prior to the series, India A will play two four-day matches against Australia A, followed by an intra-squad India match at the WACA Ground from November 15-17.
