Invoking Mahabharat In Lok Sabha Became Fashion: Speaker Om Birla
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla commented on the increasing tendency of members to invoke the Mahabharata during discussions, stating, "Aaj kal, Mahabharat sunane ka kissa zyada chala hai yahan par."
On Friday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla commented on the increasing tendency of members to invoke the Mahabharata during discussions, stating, “Aaj kal, Mahabharat sunane ka kissa zyada chala hai yahan par.” This remark came as he interrupted BJP MP Pradip Purohit from Odisha’s Bargarh, who was elaborating on the historical significance of herbs related to an Ayurvedic college. Birla advised him, “Do not tell stories, ask the question (aap Mahabharat mat sunao, aap prashna poocho),” emphasizing the need for direct inquiries during the Question Hour.
Earlier in the week, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had also referenced the Mahabharata in his criticism of the current government, likening the political climate to a ‘chakravyuh’—a complex military formation from the epic designed to trap warriors. He argued that a small group was creating a fearful atmosphere across the country, using this metaphor to illustrate his point about political monopolies and the influence of big businesses on governance.
In response, BJP’s Anurag Thakur countered Gandhi’s claims, pointing out historical “chakravyuhs” created by the Congress party, including significant events like the Partition and the Emergency, asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has worked to liberate the country from these traps created by the opposition.
