However, this may soon change at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport, where the innovative Smart Travel Project aims to eliminate the need for passports and ID cards entirely by 2025. This groundbreaking initiative will utilize advanced biometric technology to streamline the travel experience, making it faster, more secure, and hassle-free.
The Smart Travel Project is designed to install biometric sensors at every identification checkpoint throughout the airport, including check-in areas, immigration counters, and boarding gates. Passengers will be automatically recognized and authenticated as they navigate the airport, significantly reducing wait times and enhancing overall efficiency.
According to Andrew Murphy, the airport’s chief information officer, this system allows travelers to move from curbside to gate in under 15 minutes, a remarkable feat for a facility capable of handling millions of passengers annually.
Currently, the biometric technology is already operational in select areas of the airport, particularly for flights operated by Etihad Airways. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) will capture biometric data from all incoming travelers, whether residents or tourists, upon their arrival in the UAE. This data will be used to verify identities as passengers progress through various checkpoints, ensuring a seamless travel experience.
The project, which is being implemented in collaboration with Next 50, a company specializing in AI-based transportation solutions, will be rolled out in three phases. The first phase includes the introduction of automated traveler registration services, self-service baggage delivery, and facial recognition at key locations within the airport. As the project expands, it will integrate biometric systems across all security and operational touchpoints, further enhancing the passenger experience.
In a recent survey conducted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 75% of travelers expressed a preference for using biometric data over traditional travel documents, indicating a strong public interest in this technological advancement. As airports worldwide begin to adopt similar biometric systems, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as a leader in the evolution of air travel.
The Smart Travel Project not only aims to improve passenger convenience but also to uphold the highest standards of aviation security. By reducing processing times from 25 seconds to just seven seconds per passenger, the initiative will alleviate the burden on airport staff and resources, allowing for a more efficient travel environment.
