In an attempt to extinguish the flames, three helicopters dropped water over the massive music hall, which has played host to renowned performers from around the world and can accommodate several thousand spectators.
According to Russian investigations, more than 60 people were killed in the attack. The health officials stated that over 60 people were in critical condition out of the 145 injured individuals.
One of the biggest attacks to hit Russia since the 2004 Beslan school siege, which claimed the lives of over 330 people, half of them children, left the performance hall in flames and its roof collapsed.
Unconfirmed reports suggested that the death toll would increase. According to Russian officials, there is more security at Moscow’s train and airport terminals as well as on the metro.
With almost 21 million residents living in the nearby areas, the mayor cancelled all large-scale events and ordered the closure of local theaters and museums for the weekend. Security was also increased in other parts of Russia.
After the massive attack, several nations including European Union, India, France, Spain and Italy condemned the terrorist attack and extended their support to the people of Russia.
