In Abu Dhabi, a road has been named after Dr. George Matthew, an 84-year-old doctor of Indian origin, in recognition of his substantial contributions to the UAE’s healthcare sector.
This initiative by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), part of the “Honoring UAE’s Visionaries: Commemorative Streets” project, aims to celebrate individuals who have made significant impacts on the nation’s development.
Located near Sheikh Shakbooth Medical City in Al Mafraq, the road will now be called George Matthew Street. Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Matthew shared, “When I first arrived in the UAE, the infrastructure was still evolving.”
He also stated, “Inspired by the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Father of the Nation, I dedicated myself to helping the people. I am deeply grateful that my efforts have been recognized.”
Dr. Matthew arrived in the UAE in 1967 at the age of 26. Originally planning to move to the US, he was persuaded by a missionary friend who described the beauty of Al Ain to stay.
His successful application for the position of Al Ain’s first government doctor led to the opening of the first clinic under Sheikh Zayed’s blessing. Beginning his service as a general practitioner, Dr. Matthew, affectionately known as Matyous (the Emirati pronunciation of Matthew) by the locals, witnessed and contributed to the advancement of modern medicine in the UAE.
