Everything You Need To Know About National Centre Of Excellence For Animation

The Union Cabinet has given the green light for the creation of a National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR) in Mumbai.

Tentatively called the Indian Institute for Immersive Creators (IIIC), this center aims to revolutionize the AVGC sector and foster innovation in immersive technologies, modeled after the esteemed IITs and IIMs. Here’s a closer look at what this initiative involves and its potential industry impact.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Union Cabinet has approved the National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) in Mumbai, dedicated to “Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality.”

Operating as a Section 8 company under the Companies Act, 2013, the NCoE aims to bolster India’s soft power and attract foreign investments to the media and entertainment sector.

The Indian Institute for Immersive Creators (IIIC) will offer cutting-edge infrastructure and technology, focusing on immersive technologies. It will provide specialized training in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and 3D modeling and animation.

The NCoE aims to fuel “explosive growth” in India’s AVGC sector, which has already demonstrated its potential with films like RRR, Baahubali, The Lion King, and Avatar. By providing top-notch infrastructure and specialized training, the center plans to create around 500,000 jobs.
