The Union cabinet approved health coverage for senior citizens under the “Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana”. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the scheme will cover nearly six crore seniors, providing up to ₹5 lakh in benefits.
It is anticipated to aid approximately 4.5 crore families across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the new scheme in a post on X, stating, “We are dedicated to providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare for all Indians.

Eligibility
*Age Requirement: All senior citizens aged 70 and above are eligible for the scheme.
*Coverage: They receive a health cover of ₹5 lakh on a family basis.
*Additional Benefit: Senior citizens already covered under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana receive an additional ₹5 lakh in coverage exclusively for themselves, which does not need to be shared with their family.
Senior citizens with private health insurance can also benefit from this scheme. However, those covered by other public health insurance schemes, such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), or Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), must choose between their current insurance or the Ayushman Bharat scheme. All eligible beneficiaries will receive a unique card to access the scheme.
The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is the world’s largest publicly funded health insurance program, according to the government. It offers an annual health cover of ₹5 lakh per eligible family and benefits approximately 55 crore individuals and 12.34 crore families in India.
