In 2024, 2.75 lakh Indians visited Turkey, while 2.5 lakh traveled to Baku, Azerbaijan, for tourism. Indian tourists have had a significant impact on the local economies of both countries.
1. Between 2022 and 2024, Indian arrivals in Azerbaijan increased by 68%, with average stays of 4 to 6 days. In Turkey, the average Indian tourist stays 7 to 10 days.
2. Indians contribute an estimated ₹1,000 to 1,250 crore annually to Azerbaijan’s economy.
3. Indian tourists boost Turkey’s economy by ₹2,900 to 3,350 crore each year, especially in Istanbul, Cappadocia, and Antalya.
4. The average Indian tourist spends ₹1 to 1.25 lakh per trip abroad.
5. The rising Indian middle class, now 40 crore strong, with increased income and influence from social media and films, has fueled the popularity of these destinations.
Adding to the convenience, both countries eased visa procedures for Indian tourists and expanded airline connectivity from major Indian cities. This surge has led to the creation of 20,000 direct and 45,000 to 60,000 indirect jobs in the tourism sector. Furthermore, Indian investments in Turkey’s hospitality industry have grown by 35% over the last four years.
From destination weddings to medical tourism, Indians are visiting for a range of experiences.
However, following ‘Operation Sindoor’, Turkey and Azerbaijan have openly supported Pakistan, including backing its demand for a neutral investigation into the Pahalgam terror attack. This stance has drawn sharp criticism from Indian citizens.
With India itself offering countless beautiful destinations and many friendlier nations welcoming Indian tourists, it may be time to reconsider travel plans to countries that take a hostile political stand.
