The Amarnath Yatra 2024 has set a new record with over 4.71 lakh devotees visiting so far, surpassing last year’s total of 4.45 lakh. On Wednesday, another 1,654 pilgrims departed from Jammu for the Valley.
The previous day saw 5,000 devotees completing the Yatra, with new batches leaving in two escorted convoys at 3:20 a.m. The first convoy of 17 vehicles carrying 456 pilgrims departed for the North Kashmir Baltal base camp, while the second convoy of 34 vehicles with 1,198 Yatris headed for the South Kashmir Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp.
Security, community kitchens, and transit arrangements have ensured a smooth Yatra this year. Local helpers, including pony operators and porters, assist pilgrims by carrying them along the challenging mountain routes.
The cave shrine, located at 3,888 meters above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas, features an ice stalagmite that changes with the moon phases, symbolizing Lord Shiva’s mythical powers.
Devotees can access the shrine via the 48 km Pahalgam route, taking 4-5 days, or the 14 km Baltal route, which takes one day. Helicopter services are available at Baltal and Chandanwari. This year’s yatra will conclude after 52 days on August 19, aligning with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.
