In his first press conference as the head coach of Team India, Gautam Gambhir expressed strong support for veteran players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, suggesting that both could be integral to the squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup, provided they maintain their fitness. Gambhir emphasized that despite their ages—Rohit at 40 and Kohli at 38 during the World Cup—they still have much to contribute to the team.
Gambhir stated, “One thing I can be very clear of is that both of those guys have a lot of cricket left in them. More importantly, with the Champions Trophy and a big tour to Australia, obviously they would be motivated enough”. He highlighted their experience and ability to perform on big stages, referencing their past successes in major tournaments like the T20 and ODI World Cups.
The coach’s comments indicate a clear intention to include Rohit and Kohli in future plans, reinforcing the notion that their skills and leadership are valuable assets for the team. Gambhir noted, “If they keep their fitness then even the 2027 World Cup” is a possibility for both players, reflecting his confidence in their capabilities and commitment to the game.
This approach aligns with the BCCI’s expectations, as Gambhir’s statements further clarify the organization’s support for Rohit as captain, particularly leading into the 2025 Champions Trophy. Overall, Gambhir’s remarks suggest a strategic vision that balances the integration of experienced players with the development of newer talent within the Indian cricket setup.
