Virat Kohli is set to take center stage as the Indian cricket team prepares to face Bangladesh in a Test series beginning September 19. With his retirement from T20 internationals, Kohli will now focus on Tests and One Day Internationals (ODIs). He has drawn frequent comparisons to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, although Kohli himself has always emphasized that Tendulkar’s achievements are unparalleled.
As of now, Kohli has amassed 80 international centuries, placing him second to Tendulkar, who holds the record with 100 centuries. However, Kohli has a chance to set a remarkable record during the upcoming series. He needs just 58 runs to reach a milestone of 27,000 runs in international cricket. Tendulkar currently holds the record for the fastest to this mark, achieving it in 623 innings. Kohli, having played 591 innings and scored 26,942 runs, is on the verge of breaking this record. If he scores the required runs within his next eight innings, he will become the first cricketer in the history of international cricket to reach 27,000 runs in fewer than 600 innings.
Besides Tendulkar, only Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara have surpassed 27,000 runs in international cricket, making Kohli’s potential achievement particularly significant in the context of cricket history.
