Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong today congratulated 'Rohan Bopanna' and Matthew Ebden for achieving the 2024 'Australian Open men's doubles' title as a team yesterday.
Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong today congratulated ‘Rohan Bopanna’ and Matthew Ebden for achieving the 2024 ‘Australian Open men’s doubles’ title as a team yesterday. Taking to his official social media account, Wong said that Australians and Indians are partnering on the global stage. She also added that the win of Bopanna and Ebden was a sign of what 2024 holds for the Indo-Aus relationship.
In the summit final, Bopanna and Ebden dominated the whole hour and forty minutes of play with their serves, winning 80% (40/50) of games with their opening delivery and avoiding break points to cap off an incredible week.
In an exciting match, the pair defeated Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori of Italy in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5. In this event, Bopanna, who was playing in his 17th Australian Open, won the men’s doubles title with ease, marking his first Grand Slam triumph. He also became the oldest Grand Slam champion at 43 years, 329 days.
Earlier, PM Narendra Modi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur also extended their congratulations to tennis star Rohan Bopanna.
The player partnered with Matthew Ebden to defeat Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-6(0), 7-5, securing the men’s doubles crown at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne and setting a record as the oldest player to win a ‘Grand Slam’ title in the Open Era of tennis.
