They Want To Do Another Bangladesh In West Bengal: CM Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee criticized political parties for what she termed “cheap politics” in the wake of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital. During her statement, she accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of exploiting the tragedy for political gain instead of supporting the victim’s family. She emphasized, “They think they can do a Bangladesh here. But let me tell you, I am not greedy for power”.

Banerjee defended her government’s response to the incident, asserting that she personally monitored the situation throughout the night, communicating with both the police commissioner and the victim’s family immediately after learning of the crime. She questioned her critics, asking, “What action did we not take?” and reaffirmed her commitment to justice, stating that the perpetrator would face severe consequences.

She praised the Kolkata Police for their swift action, highlighting that the suspect was arrested within 12 hours of the crime. The case has since been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following intervention from the Calcutta High Court, a move Banerjee welcomed, promising full cooperation with the CBI.
