In the wake of the tragic drowning of three UPSC aspirants in a coaching institute’s basement in Delhi, the Congress party has condemned both the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for engaging in a blame game. Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav expressed sorrow over the loss of young lives and stated that the incident highlights government negligence and failures of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
The students, who protested the incident, alleged that the flooding in the Rajender Nagar area resulted from long-neglected drains that had not been cleaned despite numerous complaints. Yadav pointed out that the BJP controlled the MCD for 15 years before AAP took over in 2022, questioning the accountability of both parties for the current situation.
Yadav emphasized that AAP had previously blamed the BJP for neglecting civic infrastructure but now holds responsibility for the MCD’s operations since taking control. He criticized AAP’s failure to prevent flooding despite their assurances before the monsoon season. Furthermore, he alleged a corruption nexus between the MCD and local coaching institutes, questioning how a library could operate in violation of regulations.
The Congress party, having been marginalized in Delhi politics, is seeking to revive its influence ahead of the 2025 assembly elections. Yadav stated that the party plans to strengthen its organization across the city and conduct a membership drive to restore its former prominence under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit.
Additionally, AICC functionary Abhishek Dutt called for a CBI investigation into the funds allocated for cleaning drains, questioning the whereabouts of the money given the ongoing drainage issues. He criticized the BJP for its lack of contribution to improving Delhi’s infrastructure, contrasting it with the previous administration under Dikshit, which was known for its development efforts.
As the political fallout continues, the Congress party aims to hold both the BJP and AAP accountable for their roles in this tragic incident, emphasizing the need for improved infrastructure and civic responsibility in the capital.
