The Uttarakhand government will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill before the state legislative assembly on Tuesday. The four-day special session of the assembly started on Monday.
Earlier, the Uttarakhand Cabinet approved the final draft of the UCC, which proposes uniform civil laws for all communities in the state. Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal stated that the UCC is in the consultation process and being reviewed by the Law Commission of India.
Arjun Ram Meghwal also mentioned that this is not just the issue of the Centre; the makers of the Constitution had discussed this even when the Constitution was being made. States may modify or improve it, and Goa’s government has already worked on UCC.
The Uttarakhand government has approved the UCC in the cabinet, and as soon as we get a report by the Law Commission, we will inform you, said the Union Minister. Previously, the CM received a draft of the UCC from a five-member committee led by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.
The UCC will create a legal framework for uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws for all citizens, despite religion. The approval of the UCC Bill will fulfill a significant promise made by the BJP to the state’s citizens before the 2022 Assembly elections.
