Chandigarh, Goa, and Delhi are at the forefront of electric vehicle (EV) adoption and charging infrastructure in India, according to the annual EV Index by HERE Technologies and SBD Automotive. Chandigarh tops the list with a notable score of 81.9, thanks to its comprehensive Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) deployment plan. This plan includes substantial incentives for EV purchases and the installation of charging infrastructure, resulting in the highest number of chargers per battery electric vehicle (BEV) in the country. Chandigarh has 148 chargers for a relatively small population of 179 BEVs.
Delhi stands out with approximately one charger available every 12.5 km of road, effectively addressing range anxiety and making EV charging accessible. Goa also makes significant strides in deploying charging infrastructure, contributing to the growth of EV adoption in the region.
Maharashtra and Karnataka follow, reflecting their substantial efforts in expanding EV infrastructure. Rajasthan is noteworthy for its fleet penetration, boasting the highest percentage of BEVs in its vehicle population, while Uttar Pradesh leads with the largest BEV fleet, numbering around 18,300 EVs.
Robert Fisher from SBD Automotive emphasizes the importance of coordinated efforts among automakers, energy companies, and governments to balance EV demand with the supply of vehicles and charging options. Abhijit Sengupta of HERE Technologies adds that the index helps policymakers and industry leaders make informed decisions to accelerate EV adoption.
