External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that globalization has been weaponized, designating currency, trade, and tourism as weapons. While he acknowledged the benefits of globalization, he also emphasized its drawbacks, pointing out how much of the world depends on the concentration of economic power in a small number of areas.
Jaishankar made these statements while addressing the ‘Nigerian Institute of International Affairs’ in Lagos. He also noted that the world order established in 1945 persists, with those in control reluctant to create more opportunities for others. He pointed out that returning the globe to its natural diversity is at the center of today’s global agenda in many respects.
In addition to highlighting the difficulties the globe faces in the process, Mr. Jaishankar referred to the restoration of natural variety as a “collective objective.” He further asserted that modern globalization combines technology with a certain amount of mobility and economics with interdependence and the interpenetration of a common dependency.
He also noted that the world depended on suppliers and producers from far away before the COVID-19 pandemic. He further highlighted how people struggled for gloves, masks, and basic medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed that the world today needs to be de-risked from over-concentration.
