On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, will be posthumously conferred upon former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. The Prime Minister expressed that this recognition is a tribute to Charan Singh’s unparalleled contributions to the nation.
In a statement on his official X account, PM Modi acknowledged the good fortune of the government in honoring Chaudhary Charan Singh with the Bharat Ratna, highlighting the former Prime Minister’s lifelong dedication to the rights and welfare of farmers.
PM Modi praised Charan Singh’s commitment to nation-building, evident throughout his roles as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Home Minister of the country, and even as an MLA. Additionally, PM Modi commended Charan Singh’s resolute stand against the Emergency, emphasizing his inspiring dedication to democracy and his unwavering support for farmers.
Born in 1902 in Noorpur, Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, Chaudhary Charan Singh hailed from a middle-class peasant family. He completed his science graduation in 1923 and pursued post-graduation at Agra University in 1925. Trained in law, he established a legal practice in Ghaziabad before relocating to Meerut in 1929 and joining the Congress party.
Charan Singh’s political journey began with his election to the UP Legislative Assembly from Chhaprauli in 1937, a constituency he continued to represent in subsequent years. He served as Parliamentary Secretary in Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant’s Government in 1946 and contributed to various departments, including Revenue, Medical and Public Health, Justice, and Information.
