Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah asserted that Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot should function as a representative of the President of India, rather than the central government. He emphasized that the Governor should not be selective or “pick and choose” when granting sanction for prosecution.
Siddaramaiah stated, “Governor is a constitutional post and we respect it. What we say is that he should work as a representative of the President of India and not the Central government.” This statement comes after Gehlot granted sanction on August 16 to investigate Siddaramaiah under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act and prosecute him under Section 218 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, in connection with the alleged Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) land allotment scam.
The Chief Minister argued that the Governor’s decision was “anti-Constitution” and “against the law,” and vowed to challenge it in court, stating that he has done nothing wrong to warrant resignation. He accused Gehlot of acting as a “puppet” of the central government and alleged discrimination, citing pending cases against other public figures.
