BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar, also a Union minister, has outlined a comprehensive protest schedule set to unfold from August 28 to September 4.
In a dramatic escalation of its criticism against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, the BJP has unveiled a series of protest activities following the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at a Kolkata state-run hospital two weeks ago. BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar, also a Union minister, has outlined a comprehensive protest schedule set to unfold from August 28 to September 4.
The BJP’s protest plan includes a sit-in at Kolkata’s Esplanade area beginning August 28, with the party’s women’s wing organizing a lockout at the state women’s commission office. Majumdar criticized the commission for its perceived inaction, labeling it as having “gone into a stupor.”
On August 29, BJP activists will target district magistrate offices across West Bengal, while demonstrations are planned outside block administrative offices on September 2. The campaign will culminate in a statewide ‘chakka jam’ on September 4, where traffic will be halted for an hour.
Majumdar also accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of failing to address women’s safety issues effectively and of shielding corrupt elements in the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. He demanded that the CBI investigate alleged financial irregularities and potential connections between the CM and hospital officials.
In response, TMC spokesperson Joy Prakash Majumdar criticized the BJP’s approach, suggesting that the protests are a diversion from the CBI’s delay in catching the perpetrators. He defended Chief Minister Banerjee, emphasizing her commitment to justice for the victim and her stance against rape.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh echoed these sentiments, arguing that the BJP’s focus on financial irregularities rather than the core issue of women’s safety undermines the genuine concerns of West Bengal’s citizens. He called for the CBI to expedite its investigation, stressing that justice for the victim should be the priority.
The unfolding political drama highlights the contentious atmosphere surrounding the tragic case and the broader issues of governance and accountability in West Bengal.
