Shubman Gill, after leading India to a 4-1 series win over Zimbabwe, expressed that captaincy brings out the best in him, highlighting his enjoyment of the leadership role on the field.
Gill, who delivered standout performances as opener and captain, amassed 170 runs at an average of 42.50 during the series in Harare. This marked his first stint as captain at the senior level, and the 24-year-old found the experience fulfilling.
“I definitely enjoy it. I think it brings out the best in me because I thrive on being involved in the game. It’s a side of me that I truly cherish on the field,” Gill remarked. He acknowledged the pressure that comes with batting and leading but emphasized the satisfaction that follows overcoming challenges.
Drawing from his experiences under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy and learning leadership qualities from various senior players like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya, Gill aims to solidify his position across all formats for India.
He credited the competitive performances of fellow young batsmen like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Abhishek Sharma, stressing that healthy competition among players will bolster India’s squad strength.
“It’s encouraging that everyone’s performing well. It demonstrates hunger and determination across the team, which is crucial for any board or country,” Gill noted, optimistic about the future selections as India prepares for upcoming series, including in Sri Lanka and against Bangladesh later this year.
