Madhapar, a village in Gujarat’s Kachchh district, is known as Asia’s richest village, with its residents holding fixed deposits worth ₹7,000 crore. The village, primarily inhabited by the Patel community, has seen its population grow from 17,000 in 2011 to around 32,000.
The secret behind Madhapar’s prosperity lies in its NRI (non-resident Indian) families, who deposit crores every year in local banks and post offices. Nearly 1,200 out of the village’s 20,000 houses are owned by families living abroad, mostly in African countries. Many also reside in the UK, Australia, America, and New Zealand.
Despite living abroad, the villagers remain deeply connected to their roots and prefer to park their money in Madhapar’s banks rather than where they live. This has led to the establishment of 17 banks, including major public and private banks like HDFC Bank, SBI, PNB, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, and Union Bank, in a single village.
The huge deposits have transformed Madhapar into a prosperous village with all basic facilities like water, sanitation, and roads. The village boasts bungalows, public and private schools, lakes, and temples, making it a shining example of how NRI wealth can drive development in rural India.
