A rape case has been filed against prominent Malayalam actor and CPI(M) MLA M Mukesh following allegations of sexual assault by a female actor. An FIR under IPC Section 376 (rape) was registered at Maradu police station in Kochi.
The case pertains to events that occurred before the new Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita came into effect. This is the third FIR against a high-profile Malayalam film personality following allegations of sexual harassment revealed in the Justice K Hema Committee report.
Recently, Thiruvananthapuram museum police filed a case against actor Sidhique for allegedly raping an actress eight years ago. The first case involved director Ranjith, accused under IPC Section 354 by a female actor from West Bengal for an incident in 2009.
Following the allegations, director Ranjith resigned from his role as chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy, and actor Sidhique stepped down as general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).
The Justice Hema Committee, formed by the Kerala government after the 2017 actress assault case, uncovered widespread harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam film industry.
Amid rising allegations of sexual harassment and exploitation involving several actors and directors, the state government announced on August 25 the formation of a seven-member special investigation team to investigate the claims.
