The Narendra Modi government has created 502,000 railway jobs between 2014 and 2024, as detailed in data presented by Indian Railways in Parliament. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav highlighted that this significantly exceeds the 411,000 jobs created by the UPA government from 2004 to 2014. The information was disclosed in response to inquiries from MP Fauzia Khan of the Sharad Pawar faction. From August to October 2022, over 11 million candidates took the RRB exams, leading to the hiring of 130,581 individuals. Vaishnav assured that there were no instances of paper leakage or similar issues during this recruitment process, with most hires filling safety-related roles. On safety, the minister reported a substantial decrease in consequential accidents, dropping from 118 in 2013-14 to 40 in 2023-24. The Railway Ministry reported that there were 1,711 consequential accidents from 2004-2014, resulting in 904 deaths. In contrast, during the NDA’s tenure, there were 678 accidents with 748 fatalities. While the number of accidents decreased by 60 percent, fatalities only dropped by 17 percent.
Safety remains a priority for the Railway Ministry, with expenditure on safety measures increasing from ₹87,736 crore in 2022-23 to ₹1,08,795 crore in 2024-25. Over 9,572 coaches have been fitted with CCTV to enhance safety. Additionally, Indian Railways has introduced a trial of two baby berths attached to lower berths in a Lucknow Mail coach, aimed at improving travel for mothers with infants. Initial passenger feedback has been positive, although the limited luggage space under the seat has caused some inconvenience.
