Kangana Ranaut’s film “Emergency*” has been at the center of controversy ever since its trailer was released, facing significant scrutiny from various quarters. The movie, which explores historical and political themes, encountered difficulties in obtaining certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Recently, the CBFC’s examining committee has given the film a provisional ‘U/A’ certification. However, this approval comes with several stipulations that must be met before the film can be officially cleared for release. The committee’s feedback includes a requirement for the filmmakers to make three specific cuts. One notable cut involves a scene showing Pakistani soldiers attacking Bangladeshi refugees. This scene, particularly graphic in its depiction, includes a moment where a soldier violently smashes the face of an infant and another where three women are beheaded. Such content has been deemed excessively violent and controversial. In addition to this, the filmmakers are required to alter a scene featuring an expletive shouted by a crowd member in reaction to a leader’s death, reflecting the CBFC’s concern over the language used.
Further recommendations from the committee include changing the surname of a family mentioned in the film and providing factual sources for several contentious historical claims. The filmmakers have been asked to supply accurate information supporting a line spoken by a character portraying Nixon, which makes disparaging references to Indian women. Additionally, the CBFC has requested factual verification for a line attributed to Churchill regarding Indian breeding patterns, and sources for research references and statistical data cited in the film. This includes details about Bangladeshi refugees, court rulings, and permissions for archival footage from ‘Operation Bluestar.’ Originally scheduled for release on September 6, 2024, “Emergency” has faced delays. Kangana Ranaut confirmed on September 6 that the film would not be released on the planned date due to the ongoing certification issues. The film has also stirred significant controversy within the Sikh community, which argues that the portrayal in the trailer reflects a false narrative against them. As the filmmakers work to address these issues, the release of *Emergency* remains pending, with the film’s future uncertain amidst the controversies and requirements set forth by the CBFC.
