Is Kangana Ranaut Correct? Did Celestial Bullets Cause Indira Gandhi’s Death?
This era is indeed marked by contradictions. Anubhav Sinha's limited series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack faced criticism for its factual inaccuracies, while Kangana Ranaut's "Emergency" is under scrutiny for being too factual.

In a country where outrage seems to be a national pastime, even a trailer can spark controversy. Amidst this, it’s worth noting that Kangana Ranaut, like other artists, is also entitled to freedom of speech and expression.
While Anubhav Sinha’s IC 814 series on Netflix has managed to avoid controversy by including a disclaimer about real names, Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency faces delays and has no clear release date, despite being slated for September 6.
Lyricist and filmmaker Varun Grover criticized the situation, stating, “Censorship is never right—whether of individual expression or art. It’s tragically ironic that a film about emergency faces censorship.” He added, “Creating a film is a significant act of faith, yet we let fearful individuals arbitrarily cut it.”
The film has been halted following protests by Sikh organizations, who have objected based on a 3-minute trailer. The key concerns are whether the film misrepresents the Sikh community or any related events.
Additionally, Kangana Ranaut’s perspective on the controversy needs to be considered, especially given the trust issues that have arisen between her and the Sikh community due to her past statements and their reactions to her films.
In September last year, Kangana Ranaut urged the Sikh community to “disassociate from Khalistanis,” criticizing the violent protests against her films in Punjab and requesting the community to denounce pro-Khalistani elements.
This August, as a BJP MP from Mandi, she also sparked controversy by suggesting that the farmers’ protest could have led to a situation similar to Bangladesh. Kangana Ranaut claimed that during the farmers’ protest, there were incidents of bodies hanging and rapes occurring, particularly involving participants from Haryana and Punjab.
Screenwriter and author Advaita Kala highlighted on India Today TV’s Newstrack that the underlying issue is a significant trust deficit between the Sikh community and Kangana, which is fueling the backlash against her film Emergency.
Following Kangana Ranaut’s controversial comments about the farmers’ protest, the BJP reprimanded her and advised her to avoid discussing the issue. Despite frequently criticizing the Congress for the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, the BJP has not supported its own MP’s film, Emergency.
There are allegations that the BJP may be influencing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to delay the film’s release, especially with the Haryana elections approaching where Sikhs constitute 5% of the electorate.
A government source explained to India Today TV that the film’s release was postponed due to concerns from a few religious organizations about sensitive content, emphasizing the need to avoid hurting religious sentiments.
The Emergency, imposed on June 25, 1975, and lasting until March 1977, was marked by severe repression, including a crackdown on opposition leaders and media censorship. The controversy surrounding Emergency isn’t primarily about its events but rather its connection to the Sikh community and the figure of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
Indira Gandhi’s Assassination: Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by her Sikh bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, in retaliation for Operation Blue Star. This event intensified tensions between Sikhs and the Indian state.
