A civic police volunteer has been arrested for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim, a postgraduate student, was found dead in the seminar hall.
The accused, identified as Sanjoy Roy, left behind his Bluetooth headphone at the crime scene, which was key evidence leading to his arrest. CCTV footage also placed him at the scene.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal confirmed signs of sexual assault and stated that the investigation is being conducted transparently. An autopsy, witnessed by the victim’s family, was videorecorded.
A seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by the Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Department and supervised by an Additional Commissioner of Police, is handling the case.
Following the tragic incident, students at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have expressed concerns about their safety on campus. While BJP activists have protested at the hospital, students insist on keeping politics out of the institution.
The incident has ignited a political debate, with both the BJP and CPM criticizing the police investigation as insufficient. BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar called for a CBI probe, questioning the adequacy of the arrest.
