Supreme Court Forms Committee To Address Grievances Of Protesting Farmers
The Supreme Court on Monday established a committee led by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Nawab Singh to address the grievances of protesting farmers at the Shambhu border.
The Supreme Court on Monday established a committee led by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Nawab Singh to address the grievances of protesting farmers at the Shambhu border.
Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan instructed the committee to hold its first meeting within a week. The Court emphasized that the farmers’ issues should be resolved without political interference and addressed in phases.
The Supreme Court stated that farmers have the freedom to move their peaceful protests to alternative locations. This came as the Court reviewed the Haryana government’s appeal against a high court order requiring the removal of barricades at the Shambhu border near Ambala, where farmers have been protesting since February 13.
In February, the Haryana government installed barricades on the Ambala-New Delhi national highway after the ‘Samyukta Kisan Morcha’ (non-political) and ‘Kisan Mazdoor Morcha’ announced plans for a farmers’ march to Delhi. The farmers aimed to support their demands, including a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) for their produce.
