Several flights have been delayed at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in New Delhi today due to low visibility amidst dense fog. The India Meterological Department predicted that visibility was likely to reduce in moderate fog and then improve with shallow fog. In addition to that, severe fog conditions are likely in isolated places in Delhi tonight.
The IMD predicts that dense fog is very likely to be seen in many areas of Delhi, Bihar, and Odisha on January 23, 2023. The IMD also expected dense to very dense fog conditions in the morning over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh until January 26.
Many trains bound for the national capital were running very late. According to the Northern Railways, the 12801 Rewa-Anand Vihar Express train is running with a delay of 6 hours, followed by the 12716 Amritsar-Nanded Express train with a delay of 5.30 hours. Meanwhile, dense to very dense fog conditions were observed in East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as well.
According to IMD, the airports at Palam and Safdarjung in Delhi recorded only 500-meter visibility, impacting flight operations. However, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh struggled with 25-meter visibility, while Prayagraj was at 50 meters. Also, Gaya in Bihar reported 25-meter visibility, and Patna reported 200-meter visibility.
