Afghanistan’s historic run in the T20 World Cup 2024 continued as they defeated Bangladesh by 8 runs to book their spot in the semi-finals. This was the first time Afghanistan had qualified for the semi-finals of any major ICC event.
The Rashid Khan-led side has been on a giant-killing spree, defeating New Zealand in the group stage and then stunning Australia in the Super 8 stage. Afghanistan needed to beat Bangladesh to secure their semi-final berth, and their victory also eliminated Australia from the tournament.
Following the win, Rashid Khan received a congratulatory call from Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. Muttaqi praised the team’s achievement and expressed the nation’s pride in their historic performance.

Reflecting on the victory, Rashid Khan said it was a “dream” for the team to reach the semi-finals. He credited the belief that came after beating New Zealand, and acknowledged the role of cricket legend Brian Lara, who had predicted Afghanistan’s progress to the semi-finals.
Rashid admitted that Afghanistan were 15-20 runs short with the bat, but their bowling and fielding efforts proved crucial in defending the total. He praised the team’s clarity of plans and execution, which allowed them to overcome Bangladesh and secure their place in the last four.
Afghanistan will now face South Africa in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Thursday.
