Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said today that the country is pleased with its youth achieving new heights in sports, noting that India’s top-ranked player, R Praggnanandhaa, would face reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsson in 2023.
Sitharaman, who presented the interim budget in Parliament, stated that India now has more than 80 chess grandmasters, up from around 20 in 2010. The country is proud of our youth for reaching new heights in sports, said Sitharaman.
She also said that the highest ever medal tally at the Asian Games and Asian Para Games in 2023 reflects a high level of confidence. India has over 80 chess grandmasters, compared to a little over 20 in 2010, she added.
Praggnanandhaa is the fifth youngest Grandmaster in history, after only Abhimanyu Mishra, Sergey Karjakin, Gukesh D, and Javokhir Sindarov. Praggnanandhaa, who began playing at the age of five, went on to become India’s youngest and the world’s second-youngest Grandmaster when he turned 12 in 2018.
