In a scathing attack on the Andhra Pradesh government led by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Union Minister Amit Shah has accused the ruling party of delaying the crucial Polavaram irrigation project due to corruption. Speaking at a public meeting in Dharmavaram, Shah promised that if the BJP-TDP-JSP alliance is elected to power, they will complete the Polavaram project within two years and deliver its water to the farmers.
Shah termed the Polavaram project as the “lifeline of Andhra Pradesh” and criticized the Jagan government for the delays. He lauded the previous Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government under Chandrababu Naidu for the development work carried out in the state before and after the bifurcation. However, Shah alleged that Jagan has “derailed the development” done by Naidu.
Addressing the crowd, Shah stated that under Jagan’s rule, investments have been stopped, development has come to a standstill, and unemployment has risen to higher levels. He further criticized the Chief Minister for accumulating a staggering debt of Rs. 13.50 lakh crores during his tenure, while there has been no progress in infrastructure development. Instead, Shah claimed that the state has witnessed a severe rise in land mafia activities.
Highlighting another of Jagan’s unfulfilled promises, Shah pointed out that the Chief Minister had pledged to ban alcohol in the state. However, the Union Minister remarked that Jagan has instead initiated a “liquor syndicate” within Andhra Pradesh.
Shah’s scathing remarks come as the BJP-TDP-JSP alliance is gearing up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The promise to expedite the Polavaram project, which is a long-standing demand of the people of Andhra Pradesh, is seen as a key electoral promise to win over the voters. The Union Minister’s assurance to complete the project within two years, if the alliance is elected, is likely to resonate with the electorate who have been waiting for the project’s timely completion.
