The controversy surrounding the preparation of Tirupati laddus has escalated significantly following allegations from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu that animal fat was used instead of ghee. In response, former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has accused Naidu of being a “pathological liar,” asserting that such claims are politically motivated and detrimental to the beliefs of millions of devotees.
Reddy’s letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasizes the need for Naidu to be reprimanded for what he describes as a “shameless act” aimed at spreading misinformation. He insists that the truth must be revealed to dispel the doubts among Hindu devotees regarding the sanctity of the laddus, which are considered sacred offerings at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirupati.
The allegations arose after Naidu claimed during a legislative meeting that the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government had compromised the quality of these offerings by using substandard ingredients, including animal fat, which he asserted was confirmed by a Gujarat-based laboratory. This assertion has been met with strong denials from YSRCP leaders, who labeled Naidu’s comments as malicious and politically motivated. They argue that no evidence supports his claims and that the ghee used in the laddus is sourced from high-quality indigenous cows.
The issue has not only sparked political tensions but has also reached legal forums, with petitions filed in the Supreme Court alleging violations of religious customs due to these claims. The ongoing dispute highlights the intersection of politics and religious sentiments in Andhra Pradesh, as both parties vie for public support amid an election year.
