PM Modi’s Historic Visits To Poland and Ukraine: Strengthening Ties, Promoting Peace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a historic diplomatic journey, visiting Poland and Ukraine in a span of three days. This landmark trip marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has traveled to these European nations in decades, underscoring the growing importance of India’s relations with Central and Eastern Europe.

PM Modi’s visit to Poland from August 21-22 holds particular significance, as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Poland. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit Poland was Morarji Desai in 1979, making this a momentous occasion for both countries to reflect on their shared history and chart a course for the future. During his stay in Warsaw, PM Modi will be accorded a ceremonial welcome and will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda. He will also interact with the vibrant Indian community in Poland, which includes around 25,000 individuals, 5,000 of whom are students.

Poland, the sixth-largest economy in the European Union, serves as a crucial gateway for India to expand its trade and investment footprint in the region. The bilateral trade between the two countries stands at a robust $6 billion, making Poland India’s largest trading partner in Central and Eastern Europe. Indian companies have made significant investments in Poland, totaling around $3 billion, while Polish investments in India amount to approximately $1 billion.
PM Modi’s visit is expected to further strengthen economic ties and explore new avenues for collaboration in sectors such as IT, pharmaceuticals, automotive manufacturing, and renewable energy.

The visit also holds deep historical significance, as it provides an opportunity to honor the bravery of Indian soldiers who fought alongside Polish and Allied forces during World War II. PM Modi will pay tribute at the monument for the Battle of Monte Cassino, a crucial battle that led to the liberation of Rome. The visit will also highlight the unique bond between India and Poland that dates back to the 1940s, when over 6,000 Polish women and children found refuge in the princely states of Jamnagar and Kolhapur during the war.

Following his visit to Poland, PM Modi will travel to Ukraine on August 23, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited the country since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992. This visit holds particular significance in light of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has had far-reaching global implications. PM Modi’s engagements in Kyiv will focus on a wide range of bilateral issues, including political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation.

India has maintained a balanced stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasizing the need for dialogue and diplomacy to find a peaceful resolution. During his visit, PM Modi is expected to reiterate this position and explore ways in which India can contribute to the reconstruction and recovery efforts in Ukraine.
