As the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 progress, the fourth phase emerges as a pivotal moment in India’s democratic journey. With 96 seats up for grabs across 10 states and Union Territories, political parties brace for another crucial showdown. This phase marks the halfway mark in the election process, with only three phases remaining.
A total of 1,717 candidates are in the fray, representing diverse constituencies from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The fate of numerous key faces hangs in the balance, with their political futures dependent on the outcome of this phase.
From prominent leaders like Akhilesh Yadav, Asaduddin Owaisi, and Mahua Moitra to seasoned politicians like Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, this phase will determine their roles in shaping India’s political landscape for the next five years.
Voting began at 7 am across all polling booths and concludes at 6 pm. Notably, all seats in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will participate in this phase exclusively, adding significance to the electoral process in these states.
In addition to the Lok Sabha Elections, voting for 175 Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh will also occur on May 13, coinciding with Phase 4. This assembly battle sets the stage for a triangular contest among the YSRC, the Congress-led INDIA bloc, and the NDA. In Andhra Pradesh, YS Sharmila, sister of current CM Jagan Mohan Reddy and President of State Congress Unit, is taking centre stage in Kadapa politics.
Key constituencies in Phase 4 include Araku, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Begusarai, Krishnanagar, Hyderabad, and Kannauj, among others. These constituencies witness intense competition, with leaders from various parties vying for victory.
The presence of high-profile candidates adds further intrigue to the electoral landscape. Notable contenders include Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress candidate Mahua Moitra, and former Team India cricketer Yusuf Pathan, among others.
Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra Teni aims for a third consecutive victory from Kheri in Uttar Pradesh, while TMC’s Mahua Moitra seeks re-election from Krishnanagar in West Bengal.
Among the battlegrounds in Uttar Pradesh, a tight contest is anticipated between SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and sitting BJP MP Subrat Pathak in Kannauj. This contest holds significant implications for the political landscape of the state.
As the nation awaits the outcome of Phase 4, the stakes are high for political parties and their candidates. The results of this phase will shape the trajectory of India’s political future and set the stage for the remainder of the electoral journey.
