In a piece of good news for the transgender community, the government of Delhi, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, offered free bus facilities for the transgender community in the national capital. CM Kejriwal stressed that the bus facility will provide equal dignity to transgenders, who are often discriminated against in our country.
Previously, women in Delhi were already offered a free bus facility in the national capital, and it was a big initiative by the AAP government led by CM Kejriwal to offer safe and affordable transport for women. With this scheme, women can travel for free on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses operated by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS).
In addition to that, the women and child development department of the government of Delhi has implemented a third gender category in job application forms and set up monitoring cells to safeguard transgender people from discrimination. According to 2011 Census data, the transgender community’s population in the national capital was recorded at 4,213. According to the Electoin Commission, a total of 1,176 transgender people were already enrolled as voters in the national capital.
