Central government notified rules for implementing of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on Monday. This comes days ahead of the announcing the Lok Sabha polls schedule. On multiple occasions, Home Minister Amit Shah, said that CAA rules would be notified before the Lok Sabha polls, which are to be held in April-May.
The CAA rules were introduced by the Narendra Modi government and passed by Parliament in 2019. They aim to confer Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants – including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians – who migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
Protests erupted in different parts of the country after the CAA bill was passed by the Parliament in December 2019 and it was subsequently approved by the Presidential. As per experts, the CAA law can come into action with issuing an MHA notification, which allows eligible individuals to obtain Indian citizenship.
The government wanted to implement CAA in 2020, but it was delayed for over four years due to protests. The CAA implementation also demands the formulation of its associated rules. As per officials all the regulations are prepared. The online portal, which will be used to conduct the entire process digitally was already set up, officials said.
